W-824 Aileron Gap Seal drillouts

lll5 007.jpgThe same process as the W-821's. You can detect some light corrosion on these items so a vigorous priming session is now the early order of the day!

As I'm trying to achieve a batch priming session, I had not riveted the W-821 before so that I could include these braces in the massive priming session to come!

Port flap followed the same markup/preparation as before.

Essential to measure/measure/measure and measure again to get the best result prior to drilling!

Hinge drilled out and a good result like the starboard flap fitting.

Clecoe stubs are nice and central along the hinge so thankfully, no minimum edge distance issues at this stage1

Phew! at last this is done. I've been worried about this for some time as it's a lot of drilling 'non prepunched holes' and also many builders have had edge distance issues. See next entry how things were in this regard........

I drilled through now predrilled skin and flap brace through the hinge. I started at the outboard flap for approx ten points and then did the same at the inboard end. This ensured the flap/hinge assembly was unlikely to move during the rest of the drill through.

This is the inboard hinge clamped and ready for the hinge to be drilled.

Flap - Aileron alignment 1/4"

I used a 1/4" bolt to provide for the minimum specified clearance between aileron and flap.

Trailing edge alignment was achieved using a straight edge against the aileron (r/h/s) and extended along the flap and secured with the use of 1" mini clamps.

Port wing flap/aileron alignment

Having already established the 'neutral' point of the ailerons using the ascribed tooling holes and also clamped the aileron in this position I aligned the the right flap per the instructions and clamped the following: lower skin, flap brace and flap hinge ready to drill the hinge accordingly.

My manual describes this in better detail than in the more recent editions. You may note some 'holding' rivets I merely placed in the holes so to keep the skin and brace aligned as it is not possible to use clecoes until the hinge is progressively drilled through.lll3 004.jpg
